Microblading, the most popular form of permanent makeup, is a fancy name for an eyebrow tattoo. The modern technique simulates individual hair strokes for a natural look. Cosmetic tattoo artists use a super fine pen to deposit pigment directly under the skin.

Like any tattoo, microblading does fade over time. Expect to return to your artist after 12 to 18 months for a touch-up. The pigments are designed to slowly fade over time, so it’s a personal preference when to come in for maintenance once the color starts to lose concentration.

Infection is a potential risk for any permanent makeup tattoo (as well as just about any type of body tattoo). With all of these, we are opening the skin and blood-borne pathogens can be spread, so you want to make sure technicians are using disposable, single-use tools.  Your technician should open the single-use tool in front of you. Infection can also occur if clients don't follow the proper aftercare which means keeping the area dry and staying out of the sun for about 10 days. Your artist should also schedule a follow-up appointment after six weeks or so to ensure the skin has healed properly and that you're happy with the results.

Eyeliner tattoos sit within or above the lash line to give the appearance of fuller lashes. There are many lips of liners. Two popular types are: a traditional eyeliner tattoo and a lash line enhancement. The traditional tattoo is placed right above the lash line, leaving the effect of a distinct eyeliner line. The lash enhancement sits within the lash line for a more subtle, natural look. If you're not wearing makeup, a lash enhancement will just leave you looking like you have fuller lashes.

As with brows and lips, the most prominent risk is an infection. 

Lip tattoos may bring to mind the image of a fancy grande dame with permanent lip liner who never seems to actually fill in her lips. The technique has been refined to its current form, known as lip blushing or lip tinting. The tattoo is a simple wash of sheer color across the entire lip.  The finished result should look like a just-bitten, blurred lip — the type of subtle color that looks like you've just enjoyed a make out session.

Once you've been through the 4-6 week touch-up appointment needed to first achieve your desired look, the color will last about a year or two.

People who love the blurred-lip look or want to wake up with perfect lips. Lips are a lot more sensitive than the other parts of the face, so people do experience pain and swelling. Expect to leave your appointment a little puffy and to spend a week looking like you just got fresh lip injections.

In the unfortunate event that you do develop an allergy, be aware that there's no easy fix. Expertise, artistry, proper care, and advanced knowledge of the skin will give the patient the lowest risk of complications.

Microneedling is a cosmetic procedure. It involves pricking the skin with tiny sterilized needles. The small wounds cause your body to make more collagen and elastin, which heal your skin and help you look younger. You might also hear it called collagen induction therapy.

The procedure usually takes 10-20 minutes, depending on how big the area is. Most people need 4-6 treatments to see a difference. The goal of the procedure is to start your body’s healing process by sending collagen and elastin to patch up the tiny injuries. Collagen helps fill in and smooth out wrinkles. Most people get microneedling on the face, but it can also done on other parts of the body, such as your stomach or thighs.

Microneedling is less expensive than laser treatments, which can cost about four times as much. Microneedling may work better for people with darker skin tones because it doesn’t involve heat the way laser treatments do, which can affect your skin’s pigmentation, or color. Ask your dermatologist what’s best for your skin -- and your budget.

Microneedling is a very safe and effective procedure. However, like any procedure, microneedling can cause possible complications, including bleeding, bruising, infection, scarring, and pigment problems.

Scalp Micropigmentation is a non-invasive treatment that uses detailed micro-needles to deposit pigment into the scalp. The result creates the appearance of tiny hair follicles or short hair stubble. If you are starting to thin, recede, or if you are completely bald, we can give you the look of a short buzz cut.

Scalp Micropigmentation is considered semi-permanent. While the effects may last up to eight years, the treated area will fade over time since all skin naturally exfoliates itself.

Because scalp micropigmentation doesn't make hair grow back, the final look is more of a “shadow” or buzz cut appearance. This works well for men who buzz their heads, or men or women who want to fill in thinning areas without undergoing a hair transplant.

In terms of safety, scalp micropigmentation is a relatively safe procedure with a very low-risk factor. The greatest risks in SMP, or any tattooing, is improper body substance isolation and sterilization protocols. The spreading of communicable disease is the top concern of any tattoo artist. That is why it is important to go to an experienced artist.

Eyebrow lamination is a relatively new procedure that focuses on creating shiny, smooth brows. Also sometimes called an “eyebrow perm,” the high-shine effects tend to be sought after by those who may be experiencing thinning or unruly brows. Unlike microblading, needles and coloring are not involved.

Your brows will last like this for five to eight weeks, depending on your hair. If you have thick hairs you can get away with having the treatment every eight weeks, but if your hair is fine you should leave it 10 weeks.

Brow lamination involves the “perming” of your eyebrow hairs to provide a fuller, more even look. Next, your brow hairs are brushed upward to help pull them in a uniform vertical direction. Then your provider will apply a neutralizer to help seal your brows into place. It essentially works for any client.

Just as over processing the hair on your scalp with chemicals and bleach can cause breakage, dryness, and even loss of hairs, the same holds true for eyebrow hairs.
